At Wildbnb, our goal is to slow the rate of extinction of vulnerable species.
We create habitat solutions to support the recovery of vulnerable wildlife, increase localised biodiversity and assist to heal, restore and enhance landscapes.
We design, create, deploy and nurture habitat. We work in a networked landscape approach, to support multiple species, and maximise biodiversity outcomes.
Through close relationships with landholders, conservation organisations and indigenous ranger groups, we recognise that a combination of cultural knowledge, applied science and technology helps to achieve this goal.
Australia’s biodiversity challenges are deep, and sustainable solutions take time.
To have impact our business model must be focused, disciplined and commercially sustainable.
We recognise that our success comes from bringing together a network of partners for the long-term benefit of all wildlife.
We work across natural, regenerating, agricultural and urban environments.
Our geographic centre is Bundjalung Country and the NSW Northern Rivers region, an opportunity to create 220,000 hectares of networked habitat with unique biodiversity values.
There are 300 hollow-dependant species in NSW comprising 17% of all birds, 42% of all mammals, 28% of reptiles and thousands of insect species.
It can take over 120 years for trees to form hollows, with big hollows to support larger birds and mammals developing over 200-250+ years.
Hollows are disappearing from the landscape. More extreme climate conditions and native vegetation clearing are the main factors.
Across Australia, around half a million hectares of native vegetation clearing happens each year. For every 100 hectares of native vegetation bulldozed, as many as 500 native mammals, 2,000 birds and 15,000 reptiles die. That means tens of millions of native animals are directly killed every year by removal of their homes.
There is always hope, and always new ways to support wildlife.
Widespread tree planting is now occurring. There is increasing pressure to reduce the amount of native vegetation being cleared. Vegetation and habitat protection and management plans are now commonplace in new developments.
While these are positive trends, it will still take hundreds of years for these trees to mature and provide the necessary habitat.
Wildbnb works to fill this gap.
